Formal invitations are nearly always based on a white color. It could use an ivory, cream, white, or a different shade near white. They often use an antique Roman type-face, rather than a fancy font that may be difficult to read. The design is usually simple, clean with little or no use of graphics (eg motifs / flowers etc).
